Common scams and how to spot them

Learn about common scams on Revolt and how to protect yourself from them

Unfortunately, like many online platforms, Revolt can attract scammers. We work hard to catch them, but the best defense is still a well-informed user. Here are a few common scams we’ve seen—and how to handle them if they come your way.

1. “I Accidentally Reported You” Scam

How it works

Someone messages you claiming they accidentally reported you to Revolt, and now your account is at risk of being suspended unless you contact “support” through a link or third-party account.

Why you know it’s a scam

We don’t notify users about outcomes of reports or actions taken, especially not through other users. If there’s ever an issue with your account, you will receive an official email from Revolt ending in @revolt.chat. Our support team can not be reached via a Revolt DM. To reach out to support, only email can be used.

What to do

  • Do not click any links or provide any personal information.
  • Block the user and report them to Revolt by long-tapping (or right-clicking) any message and selecting "Report".
  • Do not engage with the user further—just let us handle it.

2. Fake “Support” Accounts or DMs

How it works

A user pretends to be part of Revolt or Revolt’s moderation team. They may use official-sounding names, logos, or profile pictures. They’ll ask for your account details or direct you to click a link to “fix” an issue with your account, such as a suspension or verification problem. Sometimes they show fake emails or screenshots to make it look convincing.

Why you know it’s a scam

The only official contact you can receive from Revolt on the platform is through the Platform Moderation system account. The username is PlatformModeration#0000 (look at those four zeros!). It is not a chat—meaning you cannot reply to it. We will never DM you personally, and we will never ask for your password or personal information.

What to do

  • Do not engage with the user.
  • Report and block them immediately by long-tapping (or right-clicking) any message and selecting "Report".

3. Art Commission Scam

How it works

A stranger slides into your DMs with this classic opener:

“Heyyy! I do art commissions and was wondering if you’d like to check out my portfolio?”

They’ll send a link to what looks like a portfolio (usually full of stolen art), and try to get you to commission them. If you agree, they’ll ask for payment upfront—and then disappear.

Why you know it’s a scam

The “portfolio” is usually filled with art they didn’t create. They ask for money upfront and deliver nothing (or vanish). They often hit up lots of users using the same message or use machine-generated text and images to make it look like they’re a real artist.

What to do

  • Don’t click any links.
  • Don’t pay anyone you didn’t approach first.
  • Report and block the account by long-tapping (or right-clicking) any message and selecting "Report".

If you’re genuinely looking for commissions, stick to trusted platforms or communities with verified artists.

Finishing Notes

If you ever feel uncertain about a message or user, trust your instincts. It’s always better to be safe than sorry. If in doubt, we can help you verify whether a message or user is legitimate. You can reach out to us through our email at contact@revolt.chat or through our official support channels.

Revolt is a community-driven platform, and we rely on users like you to help keep it safe, along with our dedicated moderation team (yes, actual humans!) and automated systems. By staying informed and vigilant, you can help us create a safer environment for everyone.
